Paper Grain Direction

Short & Long Grain

A sheet of paper’s grain direction is either short grain or long grain. Long grain is when the fibres are parallel to the long side of the paper sheet. Short grain is when the fibres are parallel to the short edge.

This alignment of fibres gives paper its different strength and folding characteristics, and therefore the grain direction is important to know for any Print Operator.
